What is the Corrida Fotográfica de Portimão?

The Corrida Fotográfica de Portimão is one of Portugal’s best-known photography competitions, closely linked to the Museu de Portimão since its very first editions. It invites participants to spend a full day capturing original images based on themes set by the organisers, all within the municipality of Portimão.

The 26th edition, held as part of the museum’s 18th anniversary celebrations, runs on 16 May 2026. From morning to evening, photographers are challenged to produce 12 creative interpretations of the chosen themes, showcasing the diversity of Portimão, Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande.

This year also introduces a new artistic dimension: alongside photography, there is a drawing and sketching component, making the event even more appealing to creative visitors.

What is “Desenhar Portimão”?

The first “Desenhar Portimão” encounter runs in parallel with the photography race and focuses on drawing and painting. Organised in partnership with Urban Sketchers Algarve, it encourages participants to observe the city and its surroundings in detail and translate that into sketches and illustrations.

The drawing event also takes place on Saturday 16 May, with the Museu de Portimão acting as the information hub. From there, participants receive details about two locations to draw and/or paint during the day, between 09:00 and 18:00.

At the end, the jury selects the four best sets of works, and prizes are awarded in both photography and drawing categories, including a Youth Prize (12–17 years) and a Special Jury Prize.

Why visitors and expats will enjoy this event

For tourists, digital nomads and expats, the Corrida Fotográfica and Desenhar Portimão offer a unique way to get under the skin of the western Algarve. Instead of just passing through, you spend a whole day actively looking at streets, riverfronts and neighbourhoods with a creative eye.

The event attracts participants from different parts of Portugal and beyond, so it is also a good opportunity to meet like-minded people who enjoy photography, sketching and local culture. Because the themes focus on the municipality, you are encouraged to discover lesser-known corners of Portimão, Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande.

Winning works – both photos and drawings – are later exhibited at the Museu de Portimão in December, giving the event a lasting cultural impact.

What to expect on the day

On the day of the Corrida Fotográfica de Portimão, you can expect a busy but relaxed creative atmosphere centred around the museum:

  • A morning start at the Museu de Portimão, where participants check in and receive information about the themes or drawing locations.
  • A full day out and about in the municipality, exploring Portimão, Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande to capture images or sketches.
  • A focus on originality and personal interpretation of the themes, rather than purely technical perfection.
  • Interaction with other photographers and sketchers, including members of Urban Sketchers Algarve.

For the drawing component, you will be given two specific places to draw or paint, with the museum as the reference point for information and coordination.

Prizes are awarded to the best sets of works, with values ranging between 100 and 750 euros in both photography and drawing categories, plus special recognition for young participants and a jury’s special award.

If you are flying into Faro, you can compare car hire options at Faro Airport and drive along the A22 or coastal roads to Portimão.

Once in town, you can explore much of central Portimão on foot, and popular areas like Alvor are a short drive away.

Tips for making the most of your visit

  • Arrive at the museum early so you have plenty of time to understand the themes or drawing locations and plan your route.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, sun protection and any equipment you need for a full day outdoors (camera gear, sketchbooks, pens, paints).
  • Allow time at the end of the day to return to the museum and organise your submissions according to the competition rules.
  • Consider extending your stay to explore more things to do in the Algarve, from coastal walks to historic towns.
