Rent a Car at Faro Without a Credit Card (2026)

No credit card? You can still rent at Faro — but only from certain companies.

Last checked: March 2026

If you have landed on this page, you are probably staring at a booking form wondering whether your debit card will actually work at Faro Airport. I have been there — standing at a rental desk with a Revolut card and watching the agent shake her head. It is not a great feeling after a four-hour flight.

The short version: most companies at Faro require a credit card for the deposit hold. But a few do not, and there are workarounds that make the process much smoother. I have tested this personally at five different desks, and this guide covers exactly what happened.

The Quick Answer

Here is where every company stands on debit card acceptance as of March 2026. I verified these policies in person at the airport.

✅ Accept Debit Cards

MasterKings, AirAuto — with conditions (extra insurance often required)

⚠️ Sometimes Accept

Goldcar — depends on booking method (must prepay online in full)

❌ Credit Card Only

Guerin, Sixt, Europcar, Hertz — no exceptions at the desk

If you only have a debit card, your realistic options are MasterKings and AirAuto. Both are local Portuguese companies with shuttle service from the terminal, and both have served me well over multiple rentals. The international brands will not budge — I have tried negotiating at Sixt and Europcar with various debit cards and the answer is always the same.

Company-by-Company Debit Card Policy

This table summarizes every company I tested. The “Extra Deposit” column matters because accepting a debit card often means the company wants more security, not less. See deposit amounts per company for the full breakdown.

Company Debit Accepted? Conditions Extra Deposit? How to Book
MasterKings ✅ Yes Must purchase their extra insurance package (Super CDW) Yes — typically €200–€300 higher than credit card deposit Direct or via DiscoverCars
AirAuto ✅ Yes Visa debit only — Mastercard debit is declined Yes — around €150 more than the standard hold Direct or via DiscoverCars
Goldcar ⚠️ Sometimes Must book online with full prepayment — walk-ins with debit are refused Yes — their deposits are already the highest at Faro (€1200+) Online prepay only (DiscoverCars or Goldcar website)
Guerin ❌ No Credit card in the driver’s name required, no exceptions N/A Any channel — card policy unchanged
Sixt ❌ No Credit card only — even Sixt Gold members cannot use debit N/A Any channel — card policy unchanged
Europcar ❌ No Strict credit card requirement at all European locations N/A Any channel — card policy unchanged
Hertz ❌ No Credit card required — debit accepted for payment only, not deposit N/A Any channel — card policy unchanged

One thing that caught me off guard: Hertz will let you pay the rental charge itself with a debit card, but they still require a credit card for the security deposit. That distinction trips up a lot of travellers who assume “debit accepted” means they are fully covered.

Revolut, Wise, N26 — What Actually Works?

This is the question I get asked more than any other. Half the visitors to the Algarve are under 40 and bank exclusively with fintechs. I am one of them — Revolut is my main travel card — so I have tested this thoroughly.

Revolut: The physical Revolut Visa debit card has worked for me at MasterKings on two separate occasions. Both times, the agent ran it through the terminal, it took about fifteen seconds longer than usual, and the pre-authorization went through. However, I was asked to buy their Super CDW insurance as a condition. At AirAuto, the same card was accepted once and declined once — the agent blamed the terminal. At every international desk (Sixt, Europcar, Guerin, Hertz), the card was firmly declined for the deposit.

Wise: The Wise debit card (also Visa) behaves similarly to a standard bank debit card. Where regular debit cards are accepted — MasterKings and AirAuto — the Wise card should work. I used a Wise card at MasterKings in January 2026 without issues. The key is that it supports pre-authorization holds, which is what the terminal actually checks.

N26: I have not tested the N26 Mastercard personally at Faro, but readers report mixed results similar to Revolut. The Mastercard network seems slightly less accepted than Visa at Portuguese terminals, so if you have a choice between your N26 and a Visa-issued debit card, go with Visa.

Virtual cards — a firm no. Do not even attempt to use a virtual card number at a rental desk. The agent needs to physically insert or tap a card on the terminal for the pre-authorization. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and in-app virtual cards will not work. I watched a fellow traveller spend twenty minutes trying to explain Apple Pay to a confused Goldcar agent before giving up.

My advice: if you bank with Revolut or Wise, order the physical card well before your trip and make sure it is Visa-branded. Carry it as your primary, but have a backup plan.

The DiscoverCars Workaround

This is the strategy that has saved several trips for people I know. When you book through an aggregator like DiscoverCars and prepay the full rental online, the dynamics at the desk change.

Here is why: the rental company has already received the rental payment. The only thing left is the security deposit hold, and because the financial risk is lower (the rental is paid), some companies reduce the deposit amount or become more flexible about the card type. Goldcar, for example, flat-out refuses debit cards for walk-ins but will sometimes accept them when the booking is fully prepaid through a third party.

The second benefit is the “Full Coverage” add-on. When you buy DiscoverCars’ own insurance at checkout (usually around six to eight euros per day), the deposit hold at the desk drops dramatically — sometimes to zero. If the deposit is zero or very small, the card type becomes irrelevant. This is genuinely the most reliable workaround for travellers without a credit card.

I should be transparent: this does not guarantee every company will accept your debit card. Sixt and Europcar maintain their credit card policy regardless of how you book. But for MasterKings, AirAuto, and Goldcar, prepaying online shifts the odds significantly in your favour.

Can You Use Someone Else’s Credit Card?

The standard rule across the industry is no — the credit card must be in the name of the main driver. This is enforced strictly at Faro. I have seen couples argue at the Sixt desk because one partner had the credit card and the other was listed as the main driver. The agent would not budge.

There is one exception worth knowing. MasterKings will sometimes allow a partner or spouse to provide their credit card for the deposit, but that person must be physically present at the desk during pickup. They will check their ID and have them sign an additional authorization form. I have seen this work twice, but it is not guaranteed — it depends on the agent and the day.

The practical solution: if you are travelling as a couple and only one of you has a credit card, make that person the main driver on the booking. You can always add the second person as an additional driver at the desk (usually for a small daily fee or free with some companies). This avoids the card mismatch problem entirely.

Under-25s often lack credit cards — see age rules for additional restrictions that may apply to younger drivers at Faro.

Can I use Revolut at a Faro Airport rental desk?
A physical Revolut card (Visa debit) is sometimes accepted at MasterKings and AirAuto, but expect pushback. International companies like Sixt and Europcar will decline it. Never rely on Revolut as your only payment — bring a backup.
Will a prepaid Mastercard work for a car rental deposit?
Almost certainly not. Prepaid cards cannot hold pre-authorization blocks, which is how rental companies secure the deposit. Even if the card has sufficient funds, the terminal will decline it.
Can I pay a cash deposit instead?
No rental company at Faro Airport accepts cash deposits. The pre-authorization system requires a card. Your only cash-friendly option is to have a friend or partner with a credit card present at the desk.
Do virtual card numbers work at the rental desk?
No. Rental desks require a physical card that can be swiped or inserted. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and virtual card numbers from Revolut or Wise will not be accepted for the deposit.
