Renting a Car in the Algarve: How to Avoid “Deposit Shock” & Hidden Fees

The “€5 Per Day” Trap: We’ve all seen them online—rental cars for the price of a coffee. But when you land at Faro Airport, that €5 deal turns into a nightmare. They block €1,500 on your card or force you to buy insurance that costs more than the car.

I live here, and I’ve ranked the companies below based on trust, not just price.

At a Glance: The “Tier System”

To avoid scams, I categorize Faro Airport rental companies into three tiers. Choose based on your budget and risk tolerance.

The “Green Tier”: Zero Stress & On-Airport

Who is this for? Families, late-night arrivals, and anyone who hates hidden surprises.

Guerin/National is an arrivals desk. Sixt has that desk and a separate Airport Shuttle. Book the terminal branch if you do not want the bus. Both want a credit card for the hold.

PRO: Transparent fuel policies (Full-to-Full).
PRO: New cars (less than 6 months old).
CON: Usually 20-30% more expensive than budget brands.

How to book safely: Filter specifically for “Excellent Reputation” or the “In Terminal” option.

The “Yellow Tier”: Local Portuguese Value

Who is this for? Savvy travelers who want to save money but want to avoid the big corporate “traps.”

MasterKings is a five-minute walk to the white kiosk in Park P4. AirAuto is off-airport on Estrada do Aeroporto, desk 08:00–20:00, and requires a credit card for the deposit. Drive4Less is not a desk we can verify at Faro: directory pages reuse Guerin’s phone number.

PRO: MasterKings publishes a reduced-deposit cover that drops an economy hold from €1,500 to €400.
CON: AirAuto is a transfer, and neither company publishes debit as a way to skip the credit-card hold.

The “Red Tier”: The Ultra-Budget Trap

Who is this for? Students or solo travelers on a strict budget who have a credit card with a high limit.

You will see these companies (Goldcar, Interrent, etc.) offering cars for €5/day. This is not the real price. At the desk, they will try to sell you insurance for €150+. If you refuse, they will block ~€1,500 on your credit card.

Read this before you rely on it: DiscoverCars Full Coverage (often around €6/day) is cheaper than desk insurance, but it does not remove the supplier’s deposit and it does not stop the desk charging you. If the car is damaged, you pay the supplier first and claim eligible costs back. You still need a credit card with enough limit for the hold.

🚗 The “Golden Rule” of Algarve Rentals

Regardless of which tier you choose, never rely on the basic insurance included in the price.

If you add Full Coverage, know what it is. DiscoverCars reimburses eligible damage after you pay the supplier. It does not waive the deposit, and it is not the same as every supplier’s own excess waiver. Check their policy for what is actually covered before you treat it as complete protection.

Why do some companies block €1,500+ on my credit card?

That figure is MasterKings' default economy hold, and it is also AirAuto's excess on groups A and B. Guerin's published economy hold is €600, or €300 if you buy their excess reduction. Sixt starts at €500 on many compact groups. A green-tier label does not mean a €300 hold.

Are the €5 per day rental deals I see online real?

Technically yes, but they are a trap. That price gets you the bare minimum. Once you arrive at the desk, the agents are trained to upsell you aggressively. If you stick to the €5 price, you must have a credit card with a high limit to cover the massive security deposit.

Do I need a shuttle bus to get to the rental companies?

Guerin, Hertz, Europcar, Goldcar, Avis and Budget are in the terminal. Sixt has a terminal desk and a separate shuttle. MasterKings is a walk to Park P4. Klass Wagen and AirAuto are off-airport. The voucher names the branch.

Should I buy the 'Full Coverage' insurance online or at the desk?

They are different products. A supplier excess waiver can lower the hold because it is part of their contract. DiscoverCars Full Coverage reimburses eligible damage after you pay the supplier, and it does not remove the hold. Compare the two before you treat the online box as complete protection.

What is the difference between 'Green Tier' and 'Red Tier' companies?

The 'Green Tier' represents reliability: newer cars, transparent full-to-full fuel policies, and on-airport convenience. The 'Red Tier' represents ultra-low upfront prices, but comes with older cars, off-site locations, and high-pressure sales tactics.
