“Há cinema na Biblioteca! – Cinema em Tom Algarvio” is a two-day Portuguese film showcase at the Municipal Library in Lagos, on the western Algarve coast, ideal for culture lovers, expats and anyone curious about local stories on screen.

What is “Há cinema na Biblioteca! – Cinema em Tom Algarvio”?
This event is the second edition of a film initiative hosted by the Municipal Library of Lagos, this time dedicated to the theme “Cinema em Tom Algarvio” (Cinema in an Algarvian Tone). Curated by Ânia Bento, the programme brings together Portuguese films that are connected to the Algarve and, in particular, to the city of Lagos.
Across two days, the library becomes a cosy cinema space where you can watch feature and short films, meet local talent and discover how the region’s landscapes, traditions and people are portrayed on screen. It is a relaxed, cultural alternative to the beach and a great way to get to know Lagos from a different angle.

What to expect at the Lagos “Há cinema na Biblioteca!” film showcase
The programme runs over two days with different sessions:
- 9 June, 21:30 – Feature film “A Fada do Lar”: A drama by João Maia following Vera, a single mother struggling financially and emotionally after her partner disappears. The screening includes the presence of Lagos-born screenwriter André Guerra dos Santos, who also wrote the recent series “Adónis” (RTP1).
- 10 June, 17:30 – Short film session by Pedro Noel da Luz: Three short films are shown: “A Arte Xávega”, about the traditional fishing practice still found on Meia Praia; “ABC da Nossa Vida”, a documentary on a theatre project presented at the Lagos Cultural Centre; and “M-PEX Fusões”, a tribute to the Portuguese guitar and the cultural heritage of fado. The director will be there for a talk with the audience.
- 10 June, 21:30 – Feature film “Listen”: An internationally awarded film by Ana Rocha de Sousa, portraying a Portuguese family living in London who fight to regain custody of their children. The session features actor Ruben Garcia, from Lagos, one of the film’s protagonists.
Expect an intimate, respectful atmosphere typical of a library setting, with time for reflection and discussion rather than a noisy, commercial cinema vibe.

Dates and opening times
The event takes place over two days:
- 9 June: Evening screening at 21:30.
- 10 June: Afternoon short-film session at 17:30 and an evening screening at 21:30.
All sessions are held at the Biblioteca Municipal de Lagos.

Entry is free, but advance registration is required. You can register by phone, via the library’s Facebook page or by email using the contact details provided by the organisers. As places are limited, it is wise to book your spot early, especially for the evening sessions.
How to get there
Lagos is a popular town in the western Algarve, well connected by road and public transport from other coastal resorts. The Municipal Library is located within the town, making it easy to reach on foot if you are staying centrally.
If you are driving from elsewhere in the region, Lagos is accessible via the main Algarve motorway and coastal roads. Having a car can make it easier to combine the event with beach time or other stops in the area; if you are planning a wider road trip, it can be useful to compare car hire options at Faro Airport in advance.
