29–31 May 2026
What is the VIII Mostra de Papas de Milho in Silves?
The Mostra de Papas de Milho is a gastronomic showcase dedicated to one of the Algarve’s most traditional comfort foods: papas de milho, a cornmeal-based dish with deep roots in local culture. Held in the riverside Praça Al-Muthamid, in the historic town of Silves, the event brings together food, music and crafts to celebrate regional identity.
This is the eighth edition of the event, co-organised by the Silves Parish Council and Silves Municipality, with support from Associação Caminhos do Meio. It is designed as both a celebration and a way to preserve a dish that is considered representative of Algarve popular culture.
Why visitors and expats will enjoy this event
For tourists, digital nomads and expats, the VIII Mostra de Papas de Milho is a relaxed way to experience authentic Algarve flavours without needing to know the language or local scene in depth. You can wander between stalls, taste different versions of papas de milho and soak up the atmosphere of a traditional Portuguese event.
Silves itself, with its castle and old town, makes a picturesque backdrop. The mix of food, live music, young performers and craft stalls means there is something for most tastes, whether you are travelling solo, as a couple or with family.
What to expect at the Mostra de Papas de Milho
Across the three days, more than ten small food stalls (tasquinhas) serve their own takes on papas de milho, pairing the cornmeal base with a variety of ingredients. Expect a focus on traditional recipes, but also some creative twists, all centred on flavour and local produce.
Beyond the food, the square hosts:
- Craft and artisan stands with handmade items and bijouterie
- Local sweets and regional products
- Live music on the main stage, including tributes and popular Portuguese acts
- Performances by young local talent and dance and gymnastics groups
- A second stage with DJ sets to keep the energy high in the evenings
The musical line-up includes a tribute band to Xutos & Pontapés (Dados Viciados), the group Diapasão with singer Marante, and fado and TV talent-show artist Andreia Rio. Young performers such as Iris, Katrina, Risko da Velha and Rastah also take to the stage, alongside local sports and dance groups AGS – Associação de Ginástica de Silves and Àsmove Dance.
Traditional popular entertainment is provided by artists including Filipe Romão, Irmãos Cabanas, Paulo e Sónia and Grupo Etnográfico de Quelfes. On the second stage, DJs Carox and Deejay Cabrita play sets from 18:00 on all three days, creating a lively, social vibe.
Two friendly competitions add extra interest: “As Melhores Papas de Milho” (The Best Papas de Milho) and “A Tasca do Evento” (The Event’s Best Stall), with winners announced on 30 and 31 May.

How to get to the Mostra de Papas de Milho in Silves
Silves is in the central Algarve, inland from the coast and roughly between Portimão and Albufeira. Praça Al-Muthamid is a central square close to the river and the historic area, making it easy to find once you are in town.
Many visitors choose to drive, as this gives flexibility to explore the surrounding area and nearby beaches. If you are flying into the region, it can be helpful to compare Faro Airport car hire options in advance so you can head straight to Silves and other inland attractions.
Parking and local traffic conditions can vary during events, so allow extra time to arrive and walk into the square, especially in the evening.
Tips for making the most of your visit
- Arrive earlier in the evening if you prefer a calmer atmosphere and shorter queues at the food stalls.
- Bring some cash as smaller stalls and craft stands may not accept cards.
- Wear comfortable shoes – you will likely be on your feet exploring the tasquinhas, stages and craft area.
- Check the full programme on the Silves Municipality website before you go so you can time your visit for your favourite bands or DJs.
Plan the rest of your day in the Algarve
A visit to the Mostra de Papas de Milho combines perfectly with a daytime wander around Silves’ castle, cathedral and riverside. You can also use Silves as a base to explore more things to do in the Algarve, from coastal walks to nearby beaches, turning the event into part of a wider Algarve itinerary.
