One-Way Car Rental in the Algarve (2026)
Faro to Lisbon, Lisbon to Faro, or across the border — here’s what one-way really costs.
A one-way rental — picking the car up at Faro Airport and dropping it off somewhere else — is perfect for open-jaw trips: fly into Faro, explore the Algarve, then continue to Lisbon, Porto or across the border into Spain. The catch is the one-way fee, and it varies enormously by company and destination.
Before you book, it pays to choose the right company — see our ranked guide to the best car rental companies at Faro Airport.
What Is a One-Way Rental — and the Fee
With a one-way rental you return the car to a different location than you collected it. Because the company has to get the car back to its home fleet, they charge a one-way fee (sometimes called a drop-off fee). Within Portugal this is often modest or occasionally waived on promotions; cross-border drop-offs into Spain carry much higher fees and stricter conditions.
Typical One-Way Fees from Faro
| Drop-off location | Typical one-way fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lisbon | €50–€150 | Most common route; widely available |
| Porto | €100–€250 | Longer repositioning distance |
| Seville (Spain) | €150–€400+ | Cross-border; not all companies allow it |
| Lisbon → Faro (reverse) | €50–€150 | Same as the outbound route; popular for city-then-beach trips |
| Within the Algarve | €0–€40 | Often free between nearby branches |
Fees are indicative and change with season and availability. Always confirm the exact one-way fee at the booking stage — it should be shown before you pay, not sprung on you at the desk.
Which Companies Allow One-Way Rentals
The big international brands (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Guerin/Enterprise) have the widest one-way networks and are your safest bet for drop-offs in Lisbon or Porto. Smaller local operators may only allow drop-offs within Portugal, or not at all. If a one-way trip is central to your plans, book with a major brand and confirm the drop-off location is supported before paying.
The Other Direction: Lisbon Pick-Up, Faro Drop-Off
One-way rentals run both ways, and picking up in Lisbon to drop off at Faro is just as common — typically for visitors who fly into Lisbon, spend a few days in the capital, then drive south to the Algarve for the beach half of their trip. The one-way fee is broadly the same as the reverse route (roughly €50–€150 with the major brands), because the car still has to be repositioned between the two cities.
A few things are worth knowing if you’re heading Lisbon → Faro:
- You often don’t need a car in Lisbon itself. The city has an excellent metro, trams and cheap taxis, and parking in the centre is expensive and scarce. Many travellers collect the car only as they leave the city — picking up at Lisbon Airport or Sete Rios on departure day rather than paying for parking during the city stay.
- The drive is easy. Lisbon to Faro is about 2h45. The A2 is still tolled, at conventional booths — budget roughly €22–€25 each way. Once you are on the A22 in the Algarve, the toll is €0 and you do not need a transponder.
- Drop-off at Faro Airport is straightforward if you’re flying home from there. Confirm the Faro return location is on your agreement before you pay.
If your trip is really a Lisbon city break with a short Algarve add-on, treat the car as an Algarve tool rather than a Lisbon one — rent it for the southern leg only, and lean on public transport in the capital. One-Way Fee vs a Return Trip: Which Is Cheaper?
The one-way fee isn’t automatically money wasted — the question is whether it beats the alternative of returning the car to where you started and travelling onward another way. A quick comparison for the Faro ↔ Lisbon leg:
| Option | Rough cost (2 people) | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| One-way rental (Faro ↔ Lisbon) | €50–€150 fee + ~€24 tolls | You want door-to-door flexibility and have luggage or beach gear |
| Return the car + train onward | ~€0 extra rental + ~€2×€25 train | You’re happy without a car at the far end and travel light |
| Round-trip rental (back to Faro) | No one-way fee, but doubles the driving | Your itinerary loops back anyway |
As a rule of thumb: if the one-way fee is under about €100 and you’d otherwise be buying two onward train tickets plus a transfer, the one-way rental usually wins on both cost and convenience. Above that, do the maths for your exact dates.
Crossing the Border: One-Way to Spain
Dropping a car in Spain is possible but comes with the highest fees and the strictest conditions — some companies prohibit it entirely. You will also need explicit cross-border permission on the rental agreement. If Spain is your destination, read our dedicated guide on taking a rental car from the Algarve to Spain first.
Tips to Keep the One-Way Fee Down
One-way fees vary wildly for the same route. A comparison search will surface the operators offering the lowest drop-off fee for your exact pick-up and return points.
One-way availability is more limited than standard rentals, especially in summer. Booking ahead secures both the car and a lower fee.
If your itinerary is flexible, returning to Faro avoids the one-way fee entirely. For a Lisbon onward leg, sometimes a train from Faro is cheaper than the drop-off fee.
