This January, Lagos on the western Algarve coast marks its elevation to city status with a month-long cultural programme of talks, exhibitions, creative workshops and jazz, ideal for culture lovers, expats and curious visitors.
17–28 January 2026
What is “Lagos celebra elevação a cidade com muita cultura”?
This special January programme celebrates the moment Lagos was elevated to city status, using culture as the main thread. Spread across several dates, it brings together history, visual arts, crafts, storytelling and music in different venues around Lagos and the nearby village of Barão de São João.
The events highlight important local figures, showcase the creativity of schoolchildren, and connect traditional crafts and oral storytelling with contemporary artistic expression. It is a chance to see how a historic Algarve town celebrates its identity in a relaxed, community-focused way.
Why visitors and expats will enjoy this event
For international visitors, digital nomads and expats living in the Algarve, this programme offers an authentic window into local life beyond the beaches. You can:
- Learn about a fascinating historical figure linked to Lagos and the wider world.
- See how local children interpret the town’s monuments and history through art.
- Join small, hands-on workshops led by local artisans.
- Experience a jazz concert that connects global music heritage with Portuguese talent.
Because the activities are spread over several days and locations, it is easy to fit one or two events into a wider winter stay in the Algarve, whether you are based in Lagos or exploring the region.

How to get there
Lagos is a popular town on the western side of the Algarve, well connected by road to other regional hubs. It is a convenient base for winter stays, with a compact historic centre and a dedicated cultural venue at the Centro Cultural de Lagos.
Barão de São João is a small inland village in the municipality of Lagos. It is typically reached by road from Lagos, making it easy to combine a visit to the village workshops and storytelling events with time in the town itself. If you are staying elsewhere in the Algarve, travelling by car is usually the most flexible option for reaching both Lagos and Barão de São João.
Tips for making the most of your visit
- Plan which dates interest you most – for example, combine the 24 January workshops and exhibition openings, or finish the month with the jazz concert on 28 January.
- Allow time to explore Lagos’ historic streets and waterfront before or after events at the Centro Cultural.
- If you join workshops in Barão de São João, consider spending a few extra hours wandering the village and enjoying the slower pace of inland Algarve life.
- Arrive a little early for talks and concerts to find your seat comfortably and soak up the local atmosphere.
- January is a quieter month in the Algarve, so this programme is a great way to experience culture without the summer crowds.
