Carvoeiro & Ferragudo — clifftop coves and the prettiest coast

If your mental picture of the Algarve is a small sandy cove hemmed in by ochre cliffs, this stretch is where that picture is real. Carvoeiro is a former fishing village that climbed the hillside around its beach, so almost every stay comes with a view and a short walk down to the sand. The clifftop boardwalk to Algar Seco, the sea-carved rock formations five minutes east of the centre, is the best sunset stroll in the region, and the town keeps enough good restaurants open to make dinner a walk rather than a drive. Just across the Arade estuary, Ferragudo is quieter and more Portuguese — a working village of whitewashed lanes and a castle, with none of the resort feel — and it is the pick if you want charm over convenience. This is also the closest romantic base to the Benagil sea caves, the most photographed spot on the coast.

Tavira & the east — slow, calm and unhurried

The eastern Algarve moves at a different speed, and couples who have done the central coast once tend to come back here. Tavira is the loveliest town in the region: a Roman bridge over the Gio river, tiled churches, orange trees in the squares and a genuine evening life that has nothing to do with tourism. Its beach sits out on a barrier island in the Ria Formosa, reached by a short ferry — which acts as a natural filter, keeping the sand calm and the water flat and warm. This is the base for a slow trip: long lunches, a ferry to the island, no reason to rush and no cliff paths to scramble. It is also the quietest of the five bases in high season, because the crowds concentrate to the west.

Vilamoura marina — chic, polished and effortless

For a couples’ trip built around good dinners, a glass of wine by the water and no logistics to think about, Vilamoura is the smart pick. The marina is the most polished on the coast — yachts, waterfront restaurants and cocktail terraces — and the long golden Falésia beach, backed by its distinctive red-and-white cliffs, is a short walk or hop away. This is the base if you want everything within reach and a certain amount of glamour, without organising anything: dinner, a spa afternoon, a boat trip and a beach day are all on your doorstep. It is livelier and more built-up than Carvoeiro or Tavira, which is the trade-off — you come here for the ease and the marina scene, not for solitude.

Sagres — wild, quiet and end-of-the-world

At the far south-western tip, where the Algarve runs out and the Atlantic takes over, Sagres is for couples who find romance in wildness rather than polish. This is the edge of Europe: big cliffs, a historic fort on the headland, empty windswept beaches and some of the best sunsets anywhere, watched from Cabo de São Vicente, the most south-westerly point of the continent. The sea is cooler and rougher than the central coast, the town is small and low-key, and the whole area sits inside a protected natural park, so it stays undeveloped. Come here for surf, seafood, dark skies and long empty walks — not for a marina or a spa. It is the longest drive from Faro Airport, which is precisely why it is still quiet.

Lagos — a real town with the beaches to match

If you want a proper town as well as spectacular coast, Lagos is the best all-rounder for couples. The historic centre is walkable and lively in the evenings — cobbled streets, a marina, wine bars and a wide choice of restaurants — while a short walk or tuk-tuk south brings you to Ponta da Piedade, the golden cliff-and-grotto formations that rival Benagil, and the string of small coves at Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana. It has the best mix of anything on this list: a town you can spend an evening in on foot, dramatic scenery within reach, and the widest choice of boat trips on the western coast. A strong pick for a first romantic trip when you don’t want to commit entirely to either quiet or convenience.

For a special occasion

If the trip is marking something — an anniversary, a proposal, a milestone — the single upgrade that reliably delivers is getting off the crowded scheduled boats and onto one of your own. The standard way to see the coast is a group tour on a full boat with a fixed departure time; it works, and it is cheap, but it is about as private as a bus. A private charter flips that. You choose the hour, and the hour is the whole point: a late-afternoon or sunset departure is calmer on the water, empty at the caves and coves that are a scrum at midday, and lit by the best light of the day.
