Rent a Car at Faro Without a Credit Card (2026)

The desks that publish a rule still want a credit card for the deposit.

Last checked: October 14, 2026

If you have landed on this page, you are probably staring at a booking form wondering whether your debit card will actually work at Faro Airport. I have been there — standing at a rental desk with a Revolut card and watching the agent shake her head. It is not a great feeling after a four-hour flight.

The short version: every Faro desk we could check against its own terms still wants a credit card in the main driver’s name for the security hold. Debit can sometimes pay the rental. It does not replace that hold.

The Quick Answer

Here is the card rule each company publishes for the hold, checked on 14 October 2026. A desk that was flexible on a previous trip is not a plan.

❌ Credit card for the hold

Guerin, Sixt and AirAuto publish this in their own terms. Debit does not cover the deposit.

⚠️ Debit is not in the published list

MasterKings lists cash in euros, Visa, Mastercard and Amex. Goldcar’s Faro page refuses cards printed debit, prepaid, Electron or Maestro.

❌ Prepaid and virtual cards

Revolut and Wise virtual cards, Apple Pay and prepaid cards are not a substitute for a physical credit card at the desk.

If you only have a debit card, do not book a Faro car on the hope that a local desk will bend. AirAuto will take debit or cash for the rental price and still refuse the car without a credit card for the deposit. MasterKings’ own FAQ does not list debit at all.

Company-by-Company Debit Card Policy

This table summarizes every company I tested. The “Extra Deposit” column matters because accepting a debit card often means the company wants more security, not less. See deposit amounts per company for the full breakdown.

Company Debit Accepted? Conditions Extra Deposit? How to Book
MasterKings ❌ Not published FAQ lists cash in euros, Visa, Mastercard and Amex Economy hold is €1,500, or €400 with their reduction cover Do not book on debit alone
AirAuto ❌ Not for the hold Debit or cash can pay the rental. A credit card in the driver’s name is required for the deposit. Amex is refused Excess starts at €1,500 on groups A–B Off-airport desk, 08:00–20:00
Goldcar ⚠️ Narrow Faro collection page refuses cards printed debit, prepaid, Electron or Maestro. General terms say a debit card, where accepted, is charged the excess rather than blocked Commonly €1,000–€2,500 unless you buy Super Relax In-terminal. Confirm the card on the voucher
Guerin ❌ No Credit card in the driver’s name required, no exceptions N/A Any channel — card policy unchanged
Sixt ❌ No Credit card only — even Sixt Gold members cannot use debit N/A Any channel — card policy unchanged
Europcar ❌ No Credit card for the deposit. Debit may pay a prepaid rental and still not cover the hold N/A Any channel — card policy unchanged
Hertz ❌ No Bring a credit card. Faro does not publish a debit-for-the-hold rule N/A Any channel — card policy unchanged

Hertz does not publish a Faro rule that a debit card covers the security hold. Bring a credit card in the main driver’s name. A line on a US Hertz page about debit is not the Faro desk.

Revolut, Wise, N26 — What Actually Works?

This is the question I get asked more than any other. Half the visitors to the Algarve are under 40 and bank exclusively with fintechs. I am one of them — Revolut is my main travel card — so I have tested this thoroughly.

Revolut: A physical Revolut Visa is still a debit card. Guerin, Sixt and AirAuto publish a credit card for the hold, and MasterKings does not list debit. Do not treat a previous acceptance as the 2026 rule. Order nothing on the assumption that Revolut will clear the pre-authorisation.

Wise and N26: Same position. If the plastic says debit, or the account is a debit account, it is the wrong instrument for a Faro security hold. Bring a credit card in the main driver’s name, Visa or Mastercard.

Virtual cards — a firm no. Do not even attempt to use a virtual card number at a rental desk. The agent needs to physically insert or tap a card on the terminal for the pre-authorization. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and in-app virtual cards will not work. I watched a fellow traveller spend twenty minutes trying to explain Apple Pay to a confused Goldcar agent before giving up.

My advice: if you bank with Revolut or Wise, order the physical card well before your trip and make sure it is Visa-branded. Carry it as your primary, but have a backup plan.

The DiscoverCars Workaround

This is the strategy that has saved several trips for people I know. When you book through an aggregator like DiscoverCars and prepay the full rental online, the dynamics at the desk change.

Prepaying the rental only settles the hire charge. The security hold is still outstanding. Goldcar’s Faro collection page refuses cards printed debit, prepaid, Electron or Maestro. Paying in advance does not rewrite that line.

Full Coverage does not help with this. DiscoverCars says buying it does not remove or reduce the supplier’s deposit, and the desk still wants a physical credit card in the main driver’s name for the hold. Debit cards are still refused by most companies. Do not book Full Coverage expecting the deposit to disappear or a debit card to suddenly be accepted.

Prepaying the rental does not change the hold. Sixt, Guerin and AirAuto still want a credit card for it after the rental is paid. Do not prepay a MasterKings or Goldcar booking expecting a debit card to become acceptable.

Can You Use Someone Else’s Credit Card?

The standard rule across the industry is no — the credit card must be in the name of the main driver. This is enforced strictly at Faro. I have seen couples argue at the Sixt desk because one partner had the credit card and the other was listed as the main driver. The agent would not budge.

Do not count on a partner’s card unless that person is the main driver named on the booking and is standing at the desk. The published rule at Guerin and Sixt is that the card and the contract holder are the same person.

The practical solution: if you are travelling as a couple and only one of you has a credit card, make that person the main driver on the booking. You can always add the second person as an additional driver at the desk (usually for a small daily fee or free with some companies). This avoids the card mismatch problem entirely.

Under-25s often lack credit cards — see age rules for additional restrictions that may apply to younger drivers at Faro.

Compare Prices for Your Dates

We use DiscoverCars to compare Faro companies side by side. Their Full Coverage does not eliminate the deposit, and it does not replace a credit card at the desk.

Can I use Revolut at a Faro Airport rental desk?
Not as your only card. A Revolut debit is still a debit card. Guerin, Sixt and AirAuto publish a credit card for the deposit, and MasterKings does not list debit among its payment methods. Bring a credit card in the main driver's name.
Will a prepaid Mastercard work for a car rental deposit?
Almost certainly not. Prepaid cards cannot hold pre-authorization blocks, which is how rental companies secure the deposit. Even if the card has sufficient funds, the terminal will decline it.
Can I pay a cash deposit instead?
Cash can pay the rental at MasterKings and at AirAuto. It does not replace the security hold. AirAuto still requires a credit card in the driver's name before it releases the car, and MasterKings' pickup instructions on broker bookings ask for a credit card in the main driver's name.
Do virtual card numbers work at the rental desk?
No. Rental desks require a physical card that can be swiped or inserted. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and virtual card numbers from Revolut or Wise will not be accepted for the deposit.
