How to Road Trip the Algarve in an EV: Map, Chargers & Hotels

“Tourists panic about EV charging in Portugal because existing maps are technical and confusing. But if you know the ‘Mobi.E’ secret and book the right hotels, renting an EV is the cheapest way to explore the South.”

1. Renting an EV (Bigger Commission, Better Car)

Most tourists book the cheapest manual gasoline car. But EVs in the Algarve are often premium models (Tesla Model 3, Polestar) for a similar price. Plus, you save roughly €150 on fuel over 5 days.

Find Your EV

We recommend Discovery Cars because they clearly label “Electric” and offer full coverage insurance.

Check EV Prices & Availability Select “Electric” in the fuel filter

2. The “Mobi.E” Card Confusion

This is where everyone gets stuck. In Portugal, public chargers are part of the Mobi.E network. You cannot usually pay with a credit card directly at the machine.

  • The Problem: You need a contract card (difficult for tourists).
  • The Solution: Download the Miio App. It creates a virtual card allowing you to pay for charging via the app at almost any charger in Portugal.
  • The Backup: Ask your rental company if they provide a physical Mobi.E tag (Via Verde Electric) for a small daily fee.

3. The “Safe Route” 5-Day Itinerary

Don’t drive blindly. This route keeps you near 50kW+ Fast Chargers (DC) so you never wait more than 30 minutes.

Day & Area Recommended Stop Charging Type
Day 1: Faro to Tavira Tavira Plaza Shopping Fast (50kW)
Day 2: The East Vila Real de Sto. António Super (100kW)
Day 3: Central Algarve Shopping (Guia) Tesla Supercharger
Day 4: The West Lagos Intermarché Fast (50kW)
Day 5: Sagres Ends Hotel Memmo (Destination) Slow (Overnight)

How much does it cost to charge an EV in Portugal?
It is significantly cheaper than gasoline. A full charge at a public fast charger typically costs around €20 (providing ~300km range). If you find a hotel with free destination charging, your fuel cost is zero.
Can I pay with a credit card at the charging station?
Generally, no. Most chargers in the Portuguese 'Mobi.E' network require a specific app or card. We strongly recommend downloading the 'Miio' app before you arrive, which allows you to pay digitally.
Do rental cars come with charging cables?
Yes. Your rental should include a 'Type 2' cable in the trunk for slow public chargers and hotel wallboxes. Fast chargers (like on the highway) have their own tethered cables attached to the machine.
Do I need to return the car fully charged?
Policies vary, but most companies (like those on Discovery Cars) require you to return the vehicle with at least 80% battery to avoid a penalty fee. Always check your specific rental agreement.
Are there chargers in the small villages?
Not always. Fast chargers are concentrated along the A22 highway and in major cities (Faro, Albufeira, Portimão, Lagos). If you drive deep into the Monchique mountains or the wild West Coast, make sure you have a full charge before leaving the main roads.
